Water Mist Piping for Dwarka Expressway Tunnel

The Dwarka Expressway Tunnel is a major infrastructure project designed to support high volumes of traffic while providing a safe and reliable route for commuters.

As part of the tunnel’s fire protection infrastructure, a high-pressure water mist fire suppression system was installed to provide protection throughout the tunnel.

J Kumar Infraprojects Limited was responsible for the installation of approximately 20 kilometres of stainless-steel tubing for the system. Cenergy Offshore supported the project with the supply and installation of PYPLOK® mechanical pipe joining technology, providing an alternative to conventional welded connections.

The project had to be completed within a highly compressed schedule, making installation speed, safety and consistency critical considerations.

Scope of Work

Installing approximately 20 kilometres of high-pressure stainless-steel tubing inside a tunnel presented significant execution challenges.

The project had to be completed within a limited timeframe, while conventional welding would have introduced additional requirements for skilled welders, inspection and hot-work management.

The main challenges included:

  • Extensive piping installation over approximately 20 km
  • A highly compressed project schedule
  • Installation within a confined tunnel environment
  • Requirement for skilled welding personnel if conventional joining methods were used
  • Hot-work safety risks associated with welding
  • Need for consistent and reliable pipe joints throughout the installation

The project therefore required a joining method that could accelerate installation while reducing the need for hot work inside the tunnel.

Execution

Cenergy Offshore supplied PYPLOK® mechanical pipe joining fittings for the water mist piping system.

The PYPLOK® system provides a mechanically attached pipe connection without conventional welding. This allowed the stainless-steel tubing to be joined using a controlled, tool-based installation process.

Approximately 4,000 PYPLOK® fittings for 22 mm stainless-steel tubing were supplied for the project.

The mechanical joining approach was particularly suited to the tunnel environment, where eliminating hot work could simplify installation and improve site safety.

Piping Installation

The project involved installation of approximately 20 kilometres (65,000 feet) of stainless-steel tubing throughout the tunnel.

The PYPLOK® fittings allowed the installation team to assemble the piping without carrying out conventional welding at each connection.

The installation process used dedicated tooling to create the mechanical connection, reducing dependence on welding personnel and eliminating the need for welding-related hot work at the connection points.

This approach also provided a consistent joining process across the extensive piping network.

Installation Efficiency

The use of PYPLOK® technology significantly accelerated the installation process.

The installation team achieved a rate of more than 350 metres per day, allowing approximately 20 kilometres of stainless-steel tubing to be completed in less than eight weeks.

For a project of this scale, reducing the amount of welding and associated inspection requirements helped the installation team maintain progress within the compressed project schedule.

Safety Advantages

Working inside a tunnel introduces additional safety considerations, particularly when conventional hot-work activities are required.

By eliminating welding at the pipe connections, the PYPLOK® system reduced the need for hot-work activities during installation.

This helped minimise welding-related risks within the confined tunnel environment while allowing the piping installation to progress using a mechanical joining process.

Project Outcome

Cenergy Offshore, together with J Kumar Infraprojects Limited, successfully completed approximately 20 kilometres of stainless-steel tubing for the Dwarka Expressway Tunnel’s high-pressure water mist fire suppression system.

The use of PYPLOK® mechanical fittings enabled the extensive piping network to be installed without conventional welding at the connections.

With installation rates exceeding 350 metres per day, the project was completed in less than eight weeks, helping meet the demanding project schedule.

The completed water mist piping forms part of the tunnel’s fire protection infrastructure, providing safety coverage for the large volume of traffic using the Dwarka Expressway Tunnel.
