PYPLOK® Tubing for CIMFR Fuel & Mine Research Lab

Aneer Engineers, a specialist gas solutions provider, was awarded the tubing installation for a research laboratory at the CSIR-Central Institute for Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR), a Government of India research organisation.

The laboratory required an extensive gas distribution system serving multiple research and testing applications. The system included approximately 1,300 metres of 1/4-inch OD SS316L tubing for the distribution of multiple gases.

Aneer Engineers selected PYPLOK® non-welded tubing technology for the project, with Cenergy Offshore providing the installation expertise.

The project required the tubing to be routed at height and away from areas of regular access, making installation efficiency, connection reliability and safety particularly important.

Scope of Work

The laboratory required a large network of small-bore tubing to distribute a wide range of gases to different areas of the research facility.

The project presented several installation challenges:

  • Approximately 1,300 metres of 1/4-inch OD SS316L tubing had to be installed.
  • The tubing served multiple gas media with different operating requirements.
  • The lines had to be routed at height and away from normal access areas.
  • Conventional welding would have made installation at height more difficult and time-consuming.
  • The system required reliable, leak-tight connections suitable for laboratory gas service.
  • The extensive tubing network had to be pressure tested after installation.

The project therefore required a connection technology that could provide reliable joints while making installation practical in difficult and elevated locations.

Execution

Cenergy Offshore installed the tubing system using PYPLOK® mechanically attached fittings.

The PYPLOK® system eliminated the need for conventional welding and allowed the small-bore SS316L tubing to be connected using a controlled crimping process.

This was particularly advantageous for the project because much of the tubing had to be installed at height. The mechanical connection process simplified installation and reduced the equipment and hot-work requirements associated with conventional welded tubing.

Tubing System

The laboratory gas distribution system incorporated approximately 1,300 metres of 1/4-inch OD SS316L tubing.

The tubing served a wide range of gases, including:

  • Nitrogen (N₂)
  • Oxygen (O₂)
  • Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)
  • Carbon Monoxide (CO)
  • Helium (He)
  • Hydrogen (H₂)
  • Argon (Ar)
  • Methane (CH₄)
  • Krypton (Kr)
  • Xenon (Xe)
  • Sulphur Dioxide (SO₂)
  • Acetylene (C₂H₂)

The system pressure varied between approximately 4 and 10 bar, depending on the gas medium.

The tubing was routed at an elevated level and away from areas of regular access to reduce the risk associated with accidental damage to the lines.

PYPLOK® Installation

The PYPLOK® installation followed a controlled three-step process:

  1. Tube preparation – the tube end was checked and prepared for installation.
  2. Crimping – the PYPLOK® fitting was positioned and mechanically crimped onto the tubing using the appropriate tooling.
  3. Verification – the completed crimp was checked to confirm that the fitting had been installed correctly.

The process provided a consistent mechanical connection without requiring welding.

Individual PYPLOK® fittings could be installed in approximately five minutes, including tube-end preparation, demonstrating the efficiency of the technology for the extensive tubing network.

The simplified installation process was particularly valuable when working in difficult-to-access areas and at height.

Pressure Testing

After all tubing connections had been completed, the individual gas lines were pressure tested using the respective system gases.

The pressure was maintained for 24 hours, with the pressure gauges at both the manifold and laboratory monitored for any pressure loss that could indicate leakage.

The completed system successfully passed the pressure testing requirements, confirming the integrity of the installed tubing connections.

Project Outcome

Cenergy Offshore successfully completed the installation of approximately 1,300 metres of 1/4-inch SS316L tubing for the CIMFR Fuel & Mine Research Laboratory.

The use of PYPLOK® mechanically attached fittings enabled the extensive gas tubing network to be installed efficiently without conventional welding, which was particularly beneficial for tubing routed at height and in difficult-to-access areas.

The system provided distribution for a wide range of laboratory gases at pressures of approximately 4–10 bar, with the completed lines undergoing 24-hour pressure testing using the respective system gases.

The successful installation demonstrated the suitability of PYPLOK® technology for precision laboratory gas tubing applications where installation speed, connection reliability and access constraints are important considerations.
