Hydraulic Hardline for Granulator in JSPL Sinter Plant

Angul, Odisha

2016

Jindal Steel & Power (JSPL) was expanding its operations at its Angul plant in Odisha with a new Sinter Plant developed by Primetals, Austria.

As part of the project, Primetals selected Tube-Mac non-welded piping technology for the hydraulic hardline serving the plant’s hydraulic granulator.

Cenergy Offshore was responsible for the installation of the pre-fabricated hydraulic piping system at site under expert supervision. The system was manufactured at TMI’s facility in Austria and shipped to Angul for installation.

The project involved approximately 350 metres of hydraulic piping, designed for a system pressure of 315 bar, covering pressure, return, drain and flushing lines.

Requirement

The hydraulic granulator required a high-pressure hydraulic piping system capable of reliably connecting the hydraulic equipment while fitting within the defined plant layout.

The project required:

  • Approximately 350 metres of hydraulic hardline
  • Four hydraulic lines — pressure, return, drain and flushing
  • System pressure of 315 bar
  • Pipe sizes up to 4-inch NPS and 80 mm metric
  • Installation within the Sinter Plant environment
  • A pre-fabricated piping solution to reduce site fabrication requirements

Primetals selected Tube-Mac’s non-welded piping technology as part of the plant’s use of modern hydraulic piping technologies.

Execution

Cenergy Offshore implemented the pre-fabricated non-welded hydraulic hardline piping system supplied by Tube-Mac Industries.

The system used Tube-Mac’s:

  • 37° Flare Flange System
  • Retain Ring Flange System

The piping was manufactured and prepared at TMI’s Austrian facility before being shipped to the JSPL site in Angul.

Pre-fabrication allowed the piping system to arrive at site as engineered pipe spools, reducing the requirement for conventional pipe fabrication and welding during installation.

Piping Design & Pre-Fabrication

The hydraulic piping system was designed and supplied as a pre-fabricated piping system based on the requirements of the hydraulic granulator.

The completed system comprised approximately 350 metres of piping across four lines:

  • Pressure
  • Return
  • Drain
  • Flushing

The piping incorporated 4-inch NPS and 80 mm metric pipe sizes and was designed for an operating system pressure of 315 bar.

The pipe spools were manufactured at TMI’s Austrian facility and transported to the JSPL Sinter Plant in Angul for installation.

Installation

The pre-fabricated hydraulic hardline was installed by JSPL personnel under the supervision of a Cenergy Offshore supervisor.

The installation required the pre-fabricated piping to be positioned and assembled according to the approved piping arrangement and plant layout.

The non-welded piping system reduced the requirement for conventional welding during installation, allowing the site team to focus on positioning and assembling the pre-fabricated pipe spools.

Particular attention was given to the piping installed around and below the deck supporting the granulator motor, where the hydraulic piping had to be integrated within the available plant space.

Flushing & Pressure Testing

Following installation, the hydraulic hardline was flushed to remove contaminants introduced during transportation, handling and installation.

The completed system was subsequently pressure tested successfully to verify the integrity of the hydraulic piping before the plant was placed into operation.

The successful flushing and pressure testing confirmed the readiness of the hydraulic piping system for commissioning.

Commissioning & Handover

Following successful installation, flushing and pressure testing, the hydraulic system was commissioned as part of the Sinter Plant.

The JSPL Angul Sinter Plant subsequently commenced operations, with the hydraulic granulator piping system operating successfully as part of the plant’s hydraulic infrastructure.

Project Outcome

Cenergy Offshore successfully completed the installation of approximately 350 metres of pre-fabricated non-welded hydraulic hardline for the hydraulic granulator at JSPL’s Angul Sinter Plant.

The system was designed for 315 bar pressure and incorporated four hydraulic circuits covering pressure, return, drain and flushing requirements.

By using a pre-fabricated Tube-Mac non-welded piping system manufactured in Austria, the project reduced the requirement for conventional welding and extensive pipe fabrication at site.

The system was successfully installed under Cenergy Offshore supervision, flushed and pressure tested before the Sinter Plant commenced operations.
